Why?

The other day, Natalie had her 9-month checkup.
She's healthy and doing great! And. . . she's currently at 100% based on height-for-age.
No wonder she grows out of all her clothes so fast!
Natalie has always been somewhere above the 90'th percentile for height. Kirsten has always been between 90 and 95% as well. This is the first time either of them has actually hit 100%.

So I ask. . . WHY???

Not that being tall is a bad thing! And it easily might not last, since I was among the tallest in my class until about the third grade. In third grade everyone started catching up or passing me up, and I became the average-height person that I have been ever since.

As a girl who was tall until third grade, I have to say I did NOT like it one bit! It kind of does a number on your self-esteem, towering over the other kids in your class and being taller than all of the boys. You just feel awkward and gangly (especially since I was tall and really skinny too), and I hated having to stand in the back row of class pictures in first and second grade. I'm sure it's great if you're a boy! But not so great if you're a girl.

So really I'm just wondering why I have such an extremely tall baby and toddler, since I am 5'5" and Stephen is 5'11". Two pretty average-sized adults, wouldn't you say? I would never say I'm tall, and never say I'm short either. I'm just right in the middle. And for a guy, Stephen is also right in the middle. Where do these giraffe genes come from? I'd love to hear everyone's input on this.

  1. My 2-year-old daughter has, until very lately, been in the 75% or taller, starting out in the 90% or taller. I am just under 5'4", and my husband is about 5'8". I have some tall uncles, but that's a long way for the genes to come! We'll see what happens over the course of her life. Then my little boy, who is 5 months, was born a shortie. ;0)

  2. Well, nowadays they won't have to worry about standing on the back rows in class pictures because they don't do that anymore! :) They just have little circles on a 8x10 sheet with all the kids' faces in those circles. No one will know who the tall kid is anymore! :)

  3. Maybe your birth parents are tall and it skipped you and landed on your girls :) Emily was way tall and big (100% for weight) and now they are telling me if she continues at the same rate she'll be 5'3"

  4. Haha...wow! I can't blieve that. Who knows where it comes from. I actually have a pretty tall mom and an average dad and yet, here I am...if I stand up REALLY straight I hit 5'2"!

  5. Miss E is at the other end of the spectrum. In fact, at her 2 year appointment, I was thrilled because she was in the 25th - highest ever. And you've only got an inch on me (I'm 5'4''.) Funny how that all works. I was always on the shorter end though, standing in the very very front of the school picture with only a couple people shorter than I. I hated that too. Funny how that works.
